My Story – Pernell Caster

Hello, my name is Pernell Caster. I live in Frewsburg, NY with my wife Cathy, our 10 year old son Grady, and our dog, Roscoe. I am 56 years old and Blood Type “O”.

I previously was co-owner of our family business, Caster Well Drilling, but retired in 2014 due to health concerns. I graduated from Andrews University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and was a pilot.

The past 6 years have been filled with medical concerns that included a stroke and pacemaker and we had just started to return to a new “normal”.

I have had kidney trouble all my life and was born with a U-shaped kidney, which basically means my 2 kidneys fused together and share function. I have also been a diabetic for 20 years. I learned early in 2020 that I am in stage 4 kidney failure and will have to start dialysis soon. I am hoping to find a donor before I have to start that process.

Aside from spending time with my family, I enjoy carpentry, boating, hikes in the woods and being outdoors. I have sung in several barbershop quartets. I have remodeled several homes. I am active and have a young son who loves to spend time outdoors. I would love to buy a Class A motorhome and travel the country.

Starting dialysis is not something I’m looking forward to as I’m a very active person and it would impact my ability to do things with my family.

I realize that finding a kidney for transplant is not easy and asking a family member or a friend to consider donating a kidney is difficult. However, we know doing so greatly improves my chances of receiving a transplant. A living donor kidney donation has a much higher rate of success.

I am blood type O so a type O will match perfectly, but remember that even a non-matching kidney donation can benefit me through a “Paired Kidney Exchange”
